Galvanization is the process of applying a protective zinc coating to steel or iron to prevent rusting. The most common method is hot-dip galvanizing, in which the parts are coated by submerging them in a bath of hot, molten zinc. While the steel is submerged, the iron in the steel metallurgically reacts with the molten zinc to form a tightly-bonded alloy coating that provides superior corrosion protection to the steel.
This barrier prevents corrosive substances from reaching the underlying steel or iron and serves as a "sacrificial" anode (will corrode before the iron). It also reacts with the atmosphere to form a compact, adherent patina that is insoluble in rainwater.
