Corrosion refers to the gradual deterioration of a metal by a chemical or electrochemical reaction with its environment, ultimately degrading the useful properties of materials or structures, including mechanical strength, appearance, and permeability. Much like other natural hazards, corrosion can cause dangerous and expensive damage to everything from appliances and vehicles to wastewater systems, pipelines, public buildings, and bridges.
